Who are they suitable for?
Nowadays, handheld terminals are almost a must-have product for logistics companies when it comes to recording stock levels. Recording large inventories manually is not only time-consuming but also very cost-intensive. The saying goes: time is money. The catering industry also benefits from these devices, which allow service staff to transmit orders directly to the kitchen at the guest's table. This not only saves unnecessary travelling, but also leaves time for other tasks. The time for pad and pencil is finally over. Even a laptop with a keyboard is bulky and unwieldy in large storage rooms when it comes to cataloguing incoming and outgoing goods.
Handheld terminals are also efficient to use during stocktaking, even though the inventory management system is usually already digitally equipped; they help to list stock shortages caused by theft, breakage or damage. For libraries, which nowadays lend out far more media than just books, handheld terminals are the ideal devices for recording their constantly changing stock.
Many of these small mobile devices are also equipped with a scanner that can capture 1D and 2D barcodes in the system. Or the device can even function as an RFID reader, in which case nothing stands in the way of professional data capture.
What is special about handheld terminals?
Robust devices
Handheld terminals are characterised in particular by their robust housing, as they can be used both indoors and outdoors. For example, these devices can withstand temperatures of -20 degrees, which can be reached in cold stores, just as well as temperatures above 40 degrees. Even a rain shower is a negligible variable for a handheld terminal. This is why these devices are usually offered with IP54 or IP65 protection.
Safety tested
All handheld terminals are tested in the laboratory for their drop resistance. This involves simulating drops from a height of 1.8 metres onto concrete. The so-called Gorilla Glass used for the display is not only resistant to breakage, but also extremely scratch-resistant.
Interfaces for mobile solutions
The MDE devices (MDE is the abbreviation for mobiledata capture) have their own operating system (Android), a touchscreen display, sometimes also a keyboard and utilise various network connections such as WLAN, Bluetooth or mobile phone networks. Of course, these devices also have a USB port and interfaces to tablets, for example.
Long battery life
Despite their low weight of well under 500 grams, the battery power of some devices is sufficient for up to fifteen hours before the user has to connect it to the docking station again. Some manufacturers of handheld terminals have designed their devices in such a way that the battery can also be conveniently replaced and there is no need to go to the docking station.
Ideal mobility
Bluetooth 5.0 is a revolutionary leap forward in terms of range and important information about its use. With a data speed of up to 2 Mbit/s, Bluetooth 5.0 bridges distances of up to 240 metres. The cameras on the front and back of the MDA devices are just as suitable for taking photos and videos as they are for video telephony. The built-in LED flash ensures an evenly lit picture.
Technical refinements
Many devices for mobile data recording adjust the display brightness to the surroundings and have GPS. Others have an e-compass, a 3-axis gyro sensor and a 3-axis accelerometer to measure movement. With some manufacturers, an integrated Bluetooth beacon ensures that the device can be localised even when it is switched off. A useful function for misplaced and lost devices.
