Thermal transfer labels - durable labelling for demanding applications
The thermal transfer process is the standard when labels need to remain legible and durable over long periods of time. In contrast to direct thermal printing, where the heat acts directly on the label, in thermal transfer printing the colour is transferred from a ribbon to the label material. The result is a printed image that is significantly less sensitive to heat, moisture, chemicals and mechanical stress.
Which material for which application?
The choice of label material depends on the respective application. Paper labels with a matt or glossy surface are the cost-effective standard solution for product labelling, shelf labels and shipping labels that are not exposed to extreme environmental influences. Film labels made of polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) are used when resistance to moisture, oils or cleaning agents is required - for example in the food industry or outdoors. Polyester labels (PET) offer the highest resistance to chemicals, abrasion and extreme temperatures and are particularly suitable for type plate labelling, test labels and applications in industry or electronics production.
Choose the right colour ribbon
The quality of the print result depends not only on the label, but also on the ribbon. As a rule of thumb: wax ribbons are suitable for paper labels, wax/resin ribbons for coated papers and lightweight films, resin ribbons for polyester and high-performance films.
