Direct thermal labels - the economical solution for short-life labelling
With direct thermal printing, the print head creates the image by applying heat to a thermally sensitive coating on the label material. As no separate colour ribbon is required, the cost of thermal transfer ribbons is eliminated and media changes are simpler. This makes direct thermal labels the most economical solution wherever labels are only required for a limited period of time.
Typical areas of application
Direct thermal labels dominate wherever labels fulfil their purpose within a few days to weeks and are then disposed of. Classic areas of application include shipping labels for parcel service providers such as DHL, DPD and UPS, receipts in retail, daily labelling and best-before labels in food processing, visitor badges and temporary warehouse labelling. Direct thermal labels are also popular in logistics because they can be printed quickly and cost-effectively.
What you should look out for with direct thermal printing
Due to their design, direct thermal labels are sensitive to heat, direct sunlight and mechanical abrasion. The printed image can fade if stored for long periods under unfavourable conditions. For long-lasting applications where the label must remain legible for months or years, we therefore recommend switching to thermal transfer labels. For short-term use, on the other hand, direct thermal labels offer the best price-performance ratio.
Material variants
We offer direct thermal labels in various designs. Eco papers are the cheapest option for simple applications such as shipping labels. Top-coated papers offer an additional protective layer for a high-contrast print image and better resistance to light moisture. For special requirements such as deep-freeze applications, we offer materials that adhere reliably even at temperatures as low as -40 °C - see our deep-freeze labels.
Compatible printers
Direct thermal labels work in all printers that support the direct thermal process - from compact desktop printers for the dispatch workplace to high-performance industrial printers. Many thermal transfer printers are also capable of direct thermal mode, allowing you to switch flexibly between the two methods if required.
