What exactly is a ring scanner and how does it work?
A ring scanner - also knownas a finger scanner or wearable scanner*- is a portable barcode reader that is worn directly on the finger. In contrast to classic hand-held scanners, this design enables so-called hands-free scanning: You keep both hands free for other activities and can capture barcodes at the same time.
Typical components of a ring scanner:
- Ring/holder: Is attached to the finger or hand.
- Scan unit: Utilises laser technology or imagers to capture barcodes.
- Trigger: Usually a button or sensor on the device.
- Battery: Provides several hours of cordless operation.
- Data transmission: Via Bluetooth
Thanks to their compact design and simple operation, ring scanners are an effective way of optimising work processes in various industries and increasing productivity.
Maximum efficiency: The advantages of ring scanners at a glance
| Advantage | Advantage Description |
| Hands free | You can move items, hold parcels or perform other tasks while scanning |
| Speed | Barcodes are read faster and more efficiently - ideal for order picking. |
| Ergonomics | The ergonomic design prevents fatigue and ensures a high level of comfort. |
| Flexibility | Wireless connection via Bluetooth enables mobile data capture anywhere. |
| Precision | Modern imagers reliably read even damaged or poorly printed barcodes. |
| Cost efficiency | Often cheaper than traditional handheld scanners, especially for large teams. |
Practical example:
In order picking in the warehouse, employees can process significantly more items per hour with ring scanners, as they do not have to constantly switch between scanning and picking. This increases productivity and reduces sources of error.
Areas of application: Where ring scanners show their strengths
Ring scanners can be used in a variety of ways and are particularly beneficial in the following sectors and areas of application:
- Warehouse & logistics: order picking, goods receipt, dispatch, stocktaking
