How do I choose the right desktop printer?

You should ask yourself the following questions when making your choice:

  1. Do my labels need to be particularly durable or have a long shelf life?
  2. What print resolution do I need?
  3. How do I want to connect the printer?
  4. How wide is my label?
  5. How many labels do I print per day

What is a desktop printer anyway?

Desktop printers are small label printers for small to medium print volumes. They are characterised by the fact that they are very space-saving and absolutely suitable for office use.
The explanation for the word desktop printer seems to be the position of the printer. It is usually placed on a desk, as it can be positioned there to save space.
Unlike industrial printers, which are suitable for large print volumes and can be used continuously for twenty-four hours if necessary, compact desktop printers are ideal for printing shipping labels.

Which printing methods do these printers use?

With most desktop printers, you can choose between the two printing methods direct thermal printing (without ribbon) and thermal transfer printing.
With direct thermal printing, the label material reacts to the heat of the print head. This produces the desired print image. Due to the thermal sensitivity of the paper, the label is not very durable as it also reacts to other heat sources. A typical application for a direct thermal printer is the printing of shipping labels.

In contrast to direct thermal printers, thermal transfer printing uses a colour ribbon. The print head transfers the "colour" by heating the ribbon, which creates the printed image. This makes the label material more resistant to external influences. Possible applications are product identification labels or type plates.

What are the advantages of a desktop printer?

  • Compact size - this makes them particularly space-saving
  • Cost-effective purchase
